Are you confused about the status of Hebron Center? It may help to distinguish Hebron as property and Hebron as program.

When the Hebron Capital Campaign Committee was formed and its members visited sessions and congregations it was clearly communicated that the intent of the new facility was to expand the possibilities for the use of Hebron, particularly through providing a building which was more adult friendly and handicapped accessible. The understanding was that the use of new building would include, but not be limited to, the overnight camp program. Nor was the overnight camp program the primary reason for construction. The capital campaign was an investment in the property so that a broader program would be possible.

Presbytery action last June addressed only one program and did not address property. It was agreed to suspend regular overnight summer camp activities after the summer of 2009, until further plans are in place. The proposed 2010 Hebron Center budget makes provision for other programs, such as swimming instruction and three special youth weekends which have become part of the tradition of Hebron.

The programs of Hebron Center are varied and all of these (including some form of overnight camping) are under review by the Hebron Board, which is also doing some creative visioning around new program possibilities. The Special Committee created by Presbytery last June reviews questions relating to the property as a capital investment on the part of Presbytery. The Special Committee is scheduled to report to Presbytery in November 2009 and the Hebron Board is scheduled to present the results of its review in fall 2010. The broader time line regarding presbytery decisions related to the program and propertyof Hebron is yet to be determined.

Members of presbytery and congregations are invited to contact either Laura Rogers (President of Hebron Board) or Terry Diggory (Moderator of Presbytery) for further conversation.
